Greetings from the AAIF Co-Chairs

Welcome to the Official Website of the American Association of Interchurch Families (AAIF)! We are glad that you have found us. We hope that on these pages you can read a little about what we have been doing recently as an organization and that you will be able to see what events are coming up. As you read, know that members of the Association all share similar journeys as interchurch families in cities all over the United States. We each have stayed active in our own churches, and, frequently, we have participated in activities of our spouse's church to varying degrees. In many cases, we have also raised our children in both traditions. Some of us have also participated in the International Association of Interchurch Families (International AIF) which has added a greater depth to our understanding.

None of these interchurch family journeys has been easy, and that is why a support group was formed in Omaha, NE, and why dialogue groups developed in Louisville, KY, in the 1980's. In 1990, Father George Kilcourse asked Peter and me if we would go as a family to Northern Ireland for our first International AIF Conference. If interchurch marriage could be made to work in Northern Ireland, then we thought it could work anywhere.

We found the International AIF Conference at Corrymeela, Northern Ireland, to be very supportive. We went back in 1993 to the International AIF Conference in County Meath in Ireland. There, the AAIF (which had been publishing the ARK since 1989) was asked to host the 1996 conference in the United States. In 1996, the International Conference was held at Norfolk, VA. The Church of the Holy Apostles in Virginia Beach is both Roman Catholic and Episcopal; this ecumenical vision was important for all of us to see during that conference. The AAIF was formally incorporated after 1996 in Nebraska. Since that time, we have had conferences in Omaha, NE; Glorieta, NM; and Norfolk, VA. We have also had planning meetings in Omaha and in Louisville.

Our term as AAIF Co-Chairs began in the fall of 2005. We were reelected to a second term this past June. There are four other board positions: Vice Co-Chairs, Second Vice Co-Chairs, Secretary, and Treasurer. The next election will be in June 2009. Our Vice Co-Chairs and Second Vice Co-Chairs will be eligible to serve a second term in the same positions at that time. Once again, we have a fine and dedicated team of interchurch volunteer board members. We are pleased to serve as AAIF Co-Chairs.
